Random Google Search: Black Guys

Here are a couple of Prismacolor Marker sketches from yet another "RGS". Today's topic: Black guys. They're both 9x12 inches, and took about 6 minutes each.

Trying a new medium

Most of the caricatures that I do are made with black markers and art stix (colored pencil). I've played around with using various gray markers for shading black and white drawings, and once I tried using watercolor paints. I enjoy trying out different materials, and one of the fringe benefits to being an art teacher is that I have access to a room full of art supplies. Here are a few recent sketches that I did with on gray paper using black and white charcoal. I enjoyed the way that it let me quickly build a wide range of values, and blend shadows by smudging with my finger. Doing it this way makes me curious about using hard chalk pastels to make some caricatures in color. Hmmm......

Going to School

We get prospective students that come through my school all the time. I feel kind of bad for them, because they get a day off of school...so they can come to another school. And then they have to sit through a bunch of classes that they have zero reason to be interested in. In an effort to make things a little more enjoyable for them, I'll usually draw them a caricature. Last Thursday, Rachel visited room 101. She was happy with her souvenier.

View Askew

Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson, Clerks)

Lance Dowds (Jason Lee, Clerks II)

Jay, circa Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Jason Mewes)

Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran, Clerks II)

Kevin Smith is easily my favorite film director. I've loved his style of storytelling and the characters that he creates since I was a teenager. Here are a couple of drawings I did of a few View Askew-niverse regulars.

Random Google Search - Ugly People

One of the interesting things about good caricatures is how they balance humorous exaggeration with a good likeness. If someone is cute or attractive, there is not much risk of insulting them. If they are, how shall we say, less than attractive, the risk is somewhat higher. With that in mind, tonight's random Google search is: Ugly People. The drawings were done with Prismacolor markers, and took 5-6 minutes.

Sketching Comedy

Louis CK

Bill Hicks

Dave Attell

Doug Stanhope

George Carlin

Louis Black

I love stand up comedy. I will routinely pull up a comedian that I like on Pandora, and listen to that while I am drawing. I was doing this the other day while I was looking for someone to draw pictures of, and I figured, "why not draw the comics?". So I did a quick black and white caricature of each comedian that popped up on Pandora. They were done with Prismacolor markers, and averaged 6 minutes each.

Random Google Search - Old Men

Some times, just for poops and giggles, I'll enter random search terms into the Google and draw caricatures of whoever turns up. Today's random search: old men. These were done with Prismacolor double tip markers, which are awesome fun to draw with, by the way. They provide a neat looking alternative to color stick for shading black and white caricatures. Each one was done in 5-6 minutes.
